Mapping Applications - Second Pace
Wayfaring.com is a site where you can create your own personal maps of your life, an event, or can even be used as a travelogue or to even store photos and videos by where they were taken. Having students (4th or 5th grade) use such a site as Wayfaring.com would allow them to explore directions, allow them to write directions, and even to document their vacations which can be accompanied by writing pieces.
A great activity to have students do would be to design a trip in a state or country, and have them map out the destinations as if they were a travel agency. Using Wayfaring they can add a "waypoint" or marker as to where the destination is located, and can add information about each destination. Mileage would be calculated, and each "waypoint" can be given a day as to when it should be visited. This would ass more of a technology spin onto the classic states unit.
